The two can often have a synergistic effect on each other (I call it the
"Type Four Death Spiral!")-you think about what an awful person you are,
how nobody will ever love you, you doubt you will ever be happy, which
just intensifies the depression, which makes you hate yourself more, and
around and around you go down into Hell (I know, I have been there!).

I am wary of either-or thinking as a matter of principle, BTW.
