: Does anyone have info. about the individual moving through the points of the E-gram. I don't just mean a person moving from Four to One, or incorporating aspects of the One, but going through all the points as a process at different levels. Like when sorting out a problem, or engaging in a creative process. Klaus Wollmar's Enneagram Workbook suggests this, but doesn't go into much detail. Helen Palmer has something similar for events over the course of a day - using the E-gram aspects as a way of looking at differing activities in relation to the self, but I'm not sure how useful that is.
: : The process model seemed to make sense when I tried in relation to anger management - I recognised the stages I'd been at - reckon now I'm at point Five, collecting information to get a big picture. The next stage is to write a letter of apology with assurances of keeping it under control - conforming point 6, then I hopefully a sense of release at point Seven when I see the Kinesiologist and have Shiatsu. Point Eight will be making use of what I've learned in working with children and the links I've got with the Self-Esteem network, and at point Nine maybe I'll chill out and realise I'm a normal person who can bring about some harmony through what she's learned.
: : I suppose at the least it's a way of realising that things will change and that if you carry on with a process, there's something to look forward to.
: : Tigs.

I think this sort of going through all the points is at a different level than the basic type. Somehow it feels to me it's a way way to prove we are not limited to our basic type, that we can find the traits of other types in ourselves and find good use for them.

This is a matter of definition, something that happened a while ago on the main board when Gigi was talking about what number Turkey represents on the enneagram. I said a country "can't have a type" but can exhibit "traits of some type".

I explained what the difference is there. In short, it's that type involves having a basic fear, motivation, the whole system--can only be applied to human beings. There is a basic type, which doesn't change.

Exhibiting type traits is just that, having traits that seem to represent a type--can be applied to groups, cultures, people, individuals and so on.
The type can change when observed in this way and is the reason why some people have trouble finding out their type, they are observing it in this way.

I think the same thing happens in your example, "5-gathering information", "6-writing a letter of apology" and so on. All those things are a part of human life, we all do things like that from time to time. (Actually not all people, but this message isn't meant to be scientifically valid...the idea counts here) We have a basic type but probably exhibt behavioral traits of others from time to time, some more than other.

Forexample, although I'm a 4, I used to exhibit 8 traits quite a lot. I've changed and the apparent eightishness has disappeared. The apparent type has changed, but I'm still a 4.

I don't know if this is any help, but the bottom line is that I make a difference between the basic type (four for most people writing here) and the apparent type (which changes according to different situations). Incorporating other types into ourselves is using different apparent types.
(Transcending type would be getting a rid of the basic type althogether, and I don't believe in it)
