"Too general to be inadequate"? There's gotta be some logic in that...I'm just not getting it. As far as I know, "inadequate" is a synonym to "insufficient", although those two words can't be used interchangeably.

No, it's not. Although most nouns ending in in -f do undergo a change to having -ves as the plural ending (fortis f becomes a lenis v), not all words follow this pattern. Goof(s) is one, as are "dwarfs" and "roofs".
