Enneagram Type 4 Board Archive Re: IntelligencePosted by Margaret on April 08, 2002 at 16:10:02: In Reply to: Intelligence posted by Emily on April 08, 2002 at 15:24:58: That's neat. How would you categorize the people on these boards? How would you profile each of us? :) : In my 20 years on this planet, I've met a lot of different people. Those people all had different intelligence levels, and I kind of categorized them as such in my mind, not consciously or anything, it's just something that happens. : Well, intelligence "levels" isn't really the right term. "Levels" suggests that one person could be smarter than another, and that's not what I'm trying to get at. So, let's just call them "different types" of intelligence. Here's a list. Remember, this is just a personal observation that I've noticed in my own life, and may not relate to your own experiences: : Modern Culture Intelligence - People who have this sort of knowledge care very deeply about fashion. Clubbing is their life, it's what they practically live for. They want to go to football games and listen to pop music radio stations in their cars, which usually have "Mean people suck" or "Bitch onboard" bumper stickers on them. They know what looks good, and a busy social life, to them, is what makes a valuable person. When they grow older, fashion is still a big deal. They might get cosmetic surgery, and gaining popularity and stature in the workplace is important. : Practical intelligence - These are the people that know how to save money, know how to sew a button on in five seconds, and know how to do my taxes. Modern culture isn't too high up on their list of important things, but making sure their checkbook is properly balanced is. They're the people who will always have a bandaid when you ask. They're superficially political, taking stances on heavy political issues that they don't fully understand. They don't like diets, and think that "we're gonna die anyway, so why live without the food we love?" They do, though, make their kids drink their milk and play outside. They know how to do just about anything that has to do with everyday life, like plating grass seed or making a mean pot roast. They like to talk about the weather, the new grocery store opening on 60th and Grover and their children's Christmas play. As life circumstances are different for every person, this type of intelligence can also be called "street smarts", when a person knows how and where to buy crack, or how to defend themself when they owe money. : Higher Level Society Intelligence - These people are more genuinely interested in politics than the Practical Intelligence people. They often know people in high places, or are an important person themself, and are acutely aware of current events and happenings. They have a very firm grasp on foreign policy, and know how to get the best table at the best restaurant in town. They're the schmoozers, the networkers. They can be just your average joe, or they can be a modern aristocrat. They're more connected to the Modern Culture Intelligence people than any other group. They have the same type of brain-wiring, but at different levels, in a way. : Doing Intelligence - These are the people that get good grades because they do their work and have an amazing short-term memory. They may not have a firm grasp on a subject, but they know how to find key words and relate them to things. These are also the people who, most of the time, will have perfect attendence records. At work, they're the people who are always on time, who do what's needed to be done, but who might not be able to tell you why they did it. They're the ones who take the longest on exams. They're really genuine people, very honest and hard-working. They're often good at sports or contruction. : Academic Intelligence - These people are able to grasp and understand and hold onto concepts easily. They are, in the traditional sense of the word, intelligent. They use their intelligence to get ahead in life, and less to gain genuine wisdom. They bask in their Straight A's and their academic letters, and join clubs in school just so it looks good on their college transcripts. They're very elitist about their intelligence, and often have a superiority complex and make others feel stupid if they aren't able to understand things as easily as them. They are often the authors of books, sometimes college professors, etc. : Genuine Intelligence - By this, I don't mean that these people are truly smart (although they are). What I mean by "genuine" is that they learn things for the sake of learning them. It's a very pure form of intelligence. It's a part of them, a natural part of them, and they don't use it to make others feel stupid. They gain knowledge from a real interest in things, people, and concepts. It isn't primarily for academic, social or career success. They don't flaunt what they know, but they do use their information and knowledge when need be. They also don't have the need to continually prove their intelligence, as the Academic type often does, through intelligence tests, contests, etc. At work, they're the people who you go to when you need to know some obscure fact, and you know you won't feel belittled or dumb after speaking with them. Often times, you would have had no idea how smart this person is until they started speaking. They don't wear their SAT scores on their sleeve. They might not get good grades at all. They're the children the teachers always said, "You're so smart, but you don't do the work!" If they do get good grades, they don't flaunt it, or really even care. : Any of these types can be in combination with any other. In my little world, at least, these are the main type of intelligences that I run into. : -Emily
