To Lauren: I have never had a depressive and/or envious person turn on me; I imagine it must be an awful experience. Still, what you said struck a chord with me because my aversion toward the plight of depressed people results from a conflict between my desire to make a positive difference in their lives, or to support them, and my sense of futility, based on past experience in which I witnessed an apparent apathy on their part to the very concept of "happiness," let alone my desire to support them. That gives rise to confusion on my part: is it right for me to assume that they should want happiness? Or, for that matter, are they really as apathetic as they seem? I'm still convinced that a resolute distance should be kept, but I'm still in conflict; not every part of me wants to let go. This confusion, for me, equals a kind of mad rage within my psyche.
