An introject is an affect, thought, belief that one internalizes unconsciously from an external source (another person.) Example: Mother projects shame upon a child and the child incorporates that into the child's own self concept thereby experiencing self loathing, depression, unworthiness, etc. without realizing the source of the shame. Introjection is a topic that might come up in therapy when values and beliefs are explored. Boundary distortions are another related topic. In Enneagram considerations, E4 might introject emotions. feelings, values; E5 might introject thoughts, concepts, beliefs. In this oversimplified example the E4 might exhibit BPD, while the E5 might be considered Schizoid. There are books about this topic so please make allowances for this very limited overview.
