I am in agreement with you on the debased state of fantasy genre. I never read those sort of books. I have tried them and they are all naff and formulaic. But there are loads of really brilliant, profound, fantasy books, which are very different. many of them are classified as childrens books, but the kind read by loads of adults - usually many times. Also there are some books published for the teenage market which are very good. I've read a lot of a series/imprint called Teen Tracks which may be fantasy or sci-fi or about relationships, but are deep and meaningful, without being waffly and pretentious. I like very concise writing, very immediate writing. Some Indian authors are good - like Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. It's a genre known as Magico-realism. I usually find most Booker prize winners to my liking. Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd is another good one, about the man who built the churches in London and also built our local church. He is supposed to have been very anti-Enlightenment and believed in dark powers and said to have made a human sacrifice at each of the churches. I definately reccomend the best children's books, esp. Alan Garner, who has also written some adult ones. Try 'Elidor' or 'The Owl SErvice'.
