: When is the risk of disintegration too high? Dear Ayla, Disintegration is an ongoing process that begins in childhood and continues to intensify in our constant efforts to "conform" to society's mold of what an "adult" should be. Instead of concentrating in the risk of disintegration, focus your efforts in acknowledging/accepting its presence and learning how to reverse it. Integration is about going "against the grain," so to speak. If you wish to help your type nine friend integrate, she must move towards type three; if you (as a type four) wish to integrate, you must move towards type one. KEY ELEMENT: If you look at the enneagram as a clock, whichever wing is clockwise to the type in question is considered an "ally." In the case of type nine, a one wing becomes an ally (as you pointed out in the case of your friend). Since the nine lacks a point of reference, it is better for it to search for perfection and a clear idea of what is right or wrong (one wing) than it is to outrightly confront and dominate (wing eight). Consequently, four will benefit from a five wing. The "thinking" function provided to us by this wing helps us to make decisions more rationally, as opposed to our natural tendency to think and act "with our hearts." I hope this helps...
