: KEY ELEMENT: If you look at the enneagram as a clock, whichever wing is
: clockwise to the type in question is considered an "ally." In the case of
: type nine, a one wing becomes an ally (as you pointed out in the case of
: your friend). Since the nine lacks a point of reference, it is better for
: it to search for perfection and a clear idea of what is right or wrong (one
: wing) than it is to outrightly confront and dominate (wing eight).

I'm not so sure about this--is it really fair to say that one wing is "better" than another, or to consider one as an "ally" and the other as an "enemy"? Is a 9w1 really better off than a 9w8? As a 4w5 (and most of us here seem to be 4w5's) I can say I'm happy I have a 5 wing and not a 3 wing, but there are some good 3 qualities, and I think it would be a mistake to declare our wings "allies" and those of 4w3's "enemies."

As I understand it, a 4 integrates by becoming more objective like a 1. And someone suggested to me that for her it meant becoming more active--doing rather than just thinking about things. I think you may be seeing the 5 wing as an ally in the sense that 5's share some of that 1 objectivity, although it's generally in a more intuitive way. And a given type would always integrate to the same point (e.g. 4 always integrates to 1) regardless of the wing type.

Is this what you meant by "ally", or have I misunderstood?
