: : I don't understand exactly what it means to move towards ONE (integrate?). How exactly does this work?

: : I agree that, for me at least, the enneagram's purpose is to help me understand, grow, change, and be, as a four, a wonderful functioning, happy member of the human race. I figure everybody wants that. Sulking about being a four is silly. Thats why we're so depressive (or at least one reason).

: : Fours have a wonderful depth to their souls which I wouldn't give up for the world.
:
: l agree, Ann, that we are very special as 4's and l wouldn't wanna be any other type. But,l've also learned that to be more balanced as people, we should move more towards type 1. My point in studying the ennegram is to know myself better and become more balanced. l love learning about 4, but type one makes me mad. l don't understand ones. Mercurio, what's the best way to move against our inertia? Oh, l also have a 5wing. .

There have been several message threads here and on the main enneagram board about what it means to integrate to 1. But it's worth repeating, to share what I've learned with everyone else, and to remind myself what I should be working on. So here's integrating to 1 as I understand it:

For a 4, going to 1 means becoming more objective. We are very often caught up in our own feelings and internal states; small things people say can sometimes trigger massive emotional responses in us. Becoming more objective involves detaching from these responses, understanding where they come from, and being able to judge situations much more clearly from an outsider perspective.

Another 4 (Christy, I think) said that for her, going to 1 meant taking action as opposed to just thinking about doing things. We 4's tend to be dreamers, but also tend to be too afraid (of something) to take action and work to make our dreams a reality. For example, how many of us have aspirations of quitting our day job and becoming a writer, artist, musician, etc., and how many of us have actually quit the job and followed the dream?

1's also have a strong sense of right and wrong, and strong personal convictions. I can see integrating in that direction as meaning standing up for what we believe in rather than hiding in the corner with our beliefs out of fear. In a sense, it means being true to ourself, both inwardly and outwardly.

This is what integration means for me; I'd love to hear what it means for everyone else out there.
