Now I'm not saying my life's perfect -- I have the lottery dreams, too (I'll stay home and write freelance on my own time, and write novels); I'm also plagued by doubts about whether I have any talent for writing. No matter what praise and encouragement I get, I still feel like I'm faking it. In the end, I guess what has been helpful is that I had my years at unfulfilling work that I hated, as well as work that should have been fulfilling but I know I wasn't good at and didn't enjoy (teaching), and I've learned to really appreciate what a great job I have now. Part of that appreciation was to accept the mundane aspect of the job, too. It's not always exciting and wonderfully fulfilling, and some days I get bored and just want the day to end. But that doesn't change the fact I love what I do. I also might add it took me 10 years to get to this place, 10 years of thinking I don't know what I want to do, I'm not good at anything, I'm wasting my life, etc., etc. The day I started silently weeping at the typewriter at my last job before this one was the day I knew I had to get out -- and take action to get myself out of it. I'm rambling, but for some reason I find that easy to do when the text doesn't wrap around! I'm not sure I've been helpful or even coherent. But I do know what it's like, and I hope the best for you that you'll find the work that will fulfill you.
