: Hi all, Welcome, Scott. Yes, this is called 4w5. I remember seeing a web site somewhere that had descriptions of each type, including the wings, but I don't remember where it is. I'll see if I can locate it, and maybe someone else here or on the non-4 message board will know. In any case, here's my take on the wings: your wing is a kind of sub-type. We posess some of the qualities of our wing type, and some of its fears and motivations. No one is purely a single type, so we generally have some aspects of every type, but we will all have stronger preferences for a few types. This also means that though you may have a 5 wing, you probably also have at least some characteristics of a 3 wing, and these will affect your motivations and behaviors at least some of the time. As I see it, the wing type works counter to your main type, and the two tend to pull you in different directions at once. In a 4w5, the 4 part tends to make us focus on learning about our selves, our inner world; while the 5 wing drives us to understand the external world. We often see these as contradictory in terms of where we put our time and attention. For a 4w3, the 4 part makes us feel different, misunderstood, and pushes us to shy away from the crowd; while the 3 wing wants us to fit in, be liked, and become someone we're not to impress people. So I would say that in general, 4w5's tend to be more introverted, intellectual, thoughtful, private, insecure, and reserved. 4w3's tend to be more showy, flamboyant, outgoing, bold, image-conscious, and success-oriented. This is what I've been able to gather in my reading, conversations, and observations about people and the enneagram. I would also like to hear what others here have to say about this--how to other 4's see 4w5 as compared to 4w3? It seems that most everyone here is a 4w5, with Derf as the resident 4w3. Any other input? - Hal -
