Dear Boon,
All children come into this world as perfect creatures, knowing all the answers to all the questions and the enneagram, per se, is a system that helps us answer the most important question of all: "Why?"
One of the measures that the enneagram uses to evaluate a person's motivation is "type" which is nothing more than a comprehensive explanation of what a person's behavior will probably be like under stress.
Is "type" a result of childhood conditioning? I believe so. Since all children are born perfect, it is the parents (or lack thereof) who are the first to establish artificial boundaries on a child's behavior: every child's first source of "stress"--also known as the "original wound." The way in which parents (or parental surrogates) apply this stress is the source of our molding.
Hope this helped... ;-)
