Find gender stereotypes unbearable? Actually, my first instinct was to say no, absolutely not. Men and women are not the same, and to say that they are equal (as in identical) is wrong; the stereotypes simply reflect this. As I thought about it some more, I decided that some stereotypes do get on my nerves, such as the idea that men are less feeling and caring than women. I feel plenty, dammit, and I don't care if you don't think I do. :-) : 2. Create documentaries, character descriptions, and diplomatic speeches in your head? Constantly. My mind is always wandering into fantasies like this about conversations with people that will never happen, situations I'll never encounter, and relationships that are all in my head. : 3. Have no set sleeping schedule? I actually have a rather strict sleep schedule. I hate going through my day like a walking zombie because I'm too tired--I gave up on that in college. During the week, I'm usually in bed by 10, and I get up at 5 to meditate. Even on weekends, I still don't like to stay up too late. : 4. Worry about the way your voice sounds different on recording? I guess worry is accurate, though mostly I just hate to hear myself recorded because I don't like the way it sounds. : 5. Tune into what others are saying at a distance, or in other rooms, even if you're occupied? Like all of us, I'm sure, I'm always afriad I'm missing out on something, so I do try to tune in to what's going on at a distance, even at the expense of diverting attention from whatever (or whoever) is right in front of me. : After the questions, they usually have the essay section.... (My apologies to those who just got finished with final exams... :) : I'd like to clear up the issue about flashy attire, body piercings, exotic scented oils, and other bells and whistles that supposedly make the average Four a human peacock. : Are they right? Are they wrong? I have a slight suspicion that observations about Fours, as such, have come mostly from other types. : Also, I'd like to hear if anyone who is familiar with the Enneagram has found certain "givens" about this type to be either exaggerated or simply off-whack. (Thanks, Milly, for providing a perfect example in your post a few days ago.) : - Derf For me, the stereotype of flashy attire, body piercings, always wearing black, hanging out in coffee shops reading poetry, etc. is all way off. I buy most of my clothes at L.L. Bean. And while I'm often concerned with my appearence, I like things simple and understated. So in many ways I don't fit the image of a typical 4, but I guess that's all part of being and "individualist". I must admit that I don't follow many other conventions, and I like to do things my own way. It's sometimes ordered and rigid, but it's my way and not one that I feel others have forced on me--I don't like to feel like I'm being forced to do things, or to do them a certain way. I would guess that this attitude is typical of 4's; the individualistic part is that is comes out in different ways for differnt people. Does anyone else relate to any of this? - Hal -
