I don't have Riso's book (and yes I'm that short on cash that I can't buy it right now...) Ronnie: The only way to really get this is to read the book(s), a short explanation gives only a very limited view. However, basically it means people tend to act out the negative potentials of their personalities (enneatypes) automatically. Going to the positive direction requires conscious effort to realize you need to give up trying to reach the self-image your after. In a four's case, trying to find a stable self-image in emotions and creativiness. In a nine's case that always following other's wishes doesn't lead to calmness and balance. In an eight's case that controlling others doesn't mean you're strong. Try checking out wwww.enneagraminstitute.com, I don't know what Riso and Hudson have there, but probably something related to all this. : ["Rather, the effort required to move in the Direction of Integration is the effort of letting go of our old personality patterns"...] Definitely. That quote is from the "Personality Types" and isn't related to any specific type. : J Ronnie
