Enneagram Type 5 Board Archive I'm going to stick my neck out and ...Posted by abi on July 19, 2000 at 07:56:54: In Reply to: Reason and logic- not for all 5s posted by Gigi on July 19, 2000 at 04:52:17: : I wonder if the 5s feel overwhelmed by so much intrusion from other types on their board. But I can't help it. I find this place a reasonable forum to discuss many things (if it doesn't get diluted with antagonism!) Hi, Gigi! Don't fret about us 5's, we're use to intrusion. You'll know if we start to feel overwhelmed - we'll simply withdraw. That probably won't happen as long as the posts are interesting and informative. : The following is more of an inquiry than a statement. : To assign reason and logic to Enneatype 5 would be a mistake I think. I absolutely agree! The Thinking function shows up in all the types according to the summaries of Enneatype/MBTI studies, with a heavy showing in the 1's and 5's (why am I not surprised) and a good turnout in the 7's and 8's. Also not all 5's are INT*, some are INF*, especially the 5's with a 4 wing. Since most people naturally equate the word feeling with emotion, we sometimes forget that Feeling in the MBTI is a function of rational Judgement. Thinkers prefer to organize information impersonally and logically, while Feelers prefer to organize information personally, using value and relationship ( which, I venture to add, is probably why most 2's prefer Feeling. Now I'm going to really stick my neck out and predict that a lot of 5 INTP/INTJs are going to experience stirrings of their less preferred Feeling function as they approach middle age. Reason and logic search for definite right answers. They are analytical, exact, direct, precise, specific, and focused. They deal with reality, what is before you. On the other hand, there is conceptual thinking which brings forth many right answers. It deals with metaphors, dreams, fantasies, approximations, ambiguity. One writer differentiates these as hard and soft thinking. : So Enneatype 5s can have either or both of these thinking styles, like any other type. In Myerss Briggs terms Extraverted Thinking would be represent hard thinking, P and especially Introverted Thinking and Intuition would speak for soft thinking.
