Enneagram Type 5 Board Archive HopePosted by Robin on November 28, 2000 at 10:16:45: In Reply to: nihilist atheist 5s - how can live w/o hope and life? posted by Margaret on November 27, 2000 at 19:09:15: I'm a 5w4 and I have to confess that I do have hopes for the future. Perhaps we all do. However, I don't necessarily see a lack of hope as a bad thing. Ironically, I actually "hope" to reach a point in my life where I can abandon all of my hopes. This would mean living in the present moment with a complete sense of gratitude (instead of a feeling of neediness). This would mean feeling gratitude for a cup that is half-full instead of bemoaning the fact that it is half-empty and yearning/hoping for more. If we believe in God, it may be an error to mistake God for Santa Claus or a wish-fulfilling genie-in-a-bottle. I tend to think of God as the architect of the Universe. I am, at this moment, exactly where God intends me to be. All is in accord with God's blueprint. If I yearn for (or hope for) different circumstances, then I am questioning God's plan. In certain spiritual traditions, we acknowledge that we cannot change the world; we can only change our own outlook on the world. In certain spiritual traditions, the universe is perfect and we learn to see perfection in the present moment.
