Enneagram Type 5 Board Archive Your stuck in 1st gear, man... I'm trying to get on the highwayPosted by Rotten Apple on December 04, 2000 at 14:24:12: In Reply to: "Understanding" is the right word, the one I should have used, the one I wanted to use, and the one I did use. And you still don't. posted by Anonymous on December 04, 2000 at 12:34:39: : : >>>Every ability has to be measured. However, in caring about the potential the way I do, you are NOT proud of the measuring. You are proud of what the measuring indicates. Ability, the way I look at it, is dependent upon some measurement and directly linked with some future accomplishment, but it is neither. It must be measured and can be used, but the use and measurement are not important. This is why people have trouble figuring out what I'm trying to say. I hope that you understand where I'm coming from now...<<<< : : So size really doesn't matter? Just so long as you've got it and it works? (Well, some might like to think that...) Hahahahaha. I fully understand the distinction. I was just trying to move on to the significance of that distinction. What I'm curious about is how one determines he/she possesses the quality in which he/she has pride. Doesn't awareness come from use/measurement of the quality? If the source of awareness is role... couldn't that pose serious confusion? : The magnitude of a trait counts. It isn't binary. It is analog. An IQ of 300 is more desirable to have than an IQ of 70, even though both "work". I already acknowledged that the quality is determined by measurement of some sort. Restating that in no way damages or alters my point. And, there is never any confusion. If the thermometer arrow outside points to 8 degrees fahrenheit, you don't confuse the cold with the thermometer, and you don't go outside and physically bend the thermometer pointer over to the 90 degree mark so you can stop wearing heavy coats. Apparently I didn't communicate clearly. I trying to pull the subject back to the orginal question of role vs. identity. So, let me reiterate: Based on the YOUR definition of role as external, identity as internal. And accepting that AWARENESS comes from some amount of use/measurement of the quality. (Even if it is analog, imprecise measurement as you say) If the source of awareness is external/role... couldn't that pose serious confusion BETWEEN IDENTITY AND ROLE?
