Vulcans are E1's trying to be E5's

The Vulcan race was a fierce warlike race that contained their passion by the adoption of the philosophy and method of logic and the suppression of emotions. That's why they have the 1ish "trapdoor" of the Pon Far when all that suppressed anger and passion explodes out. The Spock character was conceptualized as an E5, but since E5's are not as exciting on screen , and Nimoy is a E1 and flavors his character as such, Spock became an E1. His human and Vulcan selfs are in constant battle, and that led to the intrigue with the Spock character and it's popularity.

Spock commented that Data is the ideal that Vulcans were trying to emulate. Data is of course a pseudo-5 in the TV series, as he had no emotions being an android. He is a 5 in the movies, especially First Contact.
