: Umm, maybe I missed something but... I don't spend a lot of time programming. Given, I do find myself thinking in internet abbreviations in "real life" (LOL!!!) and trying to format handwritten documents with HTML tags but... I never thought I'd get stuck there.

It's not a matter of getting entirely stuck. Almost certainly, after a bit of thought on it, you can figure out how it should go. However, you ARE more likely to make mistakes, and if you are not constantly monitoring what you are doing, the mistakes can often go unnoticed, and before you know it you're typing "wal i an't bad n writin".

: Reality dictates though that there is no current standard, and so I've learned versatility.

You have a different definition of "standard" than the people who talk about "standard English". When people say "This is standard English," they mean that it is what they were taught is standard English. A word means whatever the people using it believe it means. A verbal definition is simply a verbal clarification of this belief. And what is YOUR definition of "standard English"? Your saying it does not exist does not mean anything until you make clear exactly what it is that you are saying does not exist.

: I like to know that I can work any system successfully. I don't think that accepting grammar variants would cause you to make mistakes. Just because you accept them in order to understand, you don't have to assimilate them and give them validity. Like, you only give them temporary acceptance. To create a plastic working system that you can discard when it's served its purpose. That's the only way I manage to get through a day in TN. Because natives simply do not understand the term 'you guys' if you don't say 'y'all' they don't understand at all. It's been a purely evil necessity.

: You don't sound altogether content with your current approach, so I thought mine might offer some suggestions.

What do you mean, I don't sound content with my current approach?

: : The only book I know she has written about language is The Language Imperative.
: Ok. Would you believe I ran into her stuff at the library? I wasn't looking for it, but she's the one who wrote The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense. So that may turn out to be cool.

Well, yeah. She also wrote The Last Word On the Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense, The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense part II, and The Gentle Art of Communicating with Kids. But I only know of that one book, The Language Imperative, that deals with language as a whole rather than specific applications of it.
