There is another book I'll recommend : it's H.Palmer's "The Enneagram in Love and Work". There is a lot of valuable infos on the specific dynamics of interaction between the different types. My oown grounds for that matter is an analysis of types'perceptive patterns and metaprograms, a very technical yet very reliable ground. It looks into those deeply rooted subconscious programs that build up and organises our perception/feelings/actions. There might be a genetical dimension to it or for those who have read on energy pattern, there is a big influence coming from our "energy bodies". As a very good friend of mine who is a counsellor at a high level loves to say, ordinary consciousness is like a little clown totally blind to itself. Believe me it takes years of studies and experience to barely start lifting a corner of that thick dark veil put on our consciousness. The problem with enneagram is that what has been writen is already the result of years of hard research, sorting, etc... And big efforts to present the material in a clear way, which makes people think, oh, this is so simple! I can tell by experience that legions of people mistype themselves, a very current mistake is fours ashamed of seeing them as such and typing themselves as fives, I also know of a few 8w9 typing themselves as 9w8s, etc...
Immaturity and ignorance ignored and denied can do a lot of harm. So many people make big generalisations on little or no ground, just rough guesses, something a five is plain allergic to!

: I concur with Laurence. There are a lot of variables that determine whether a relationship will be sucessful. Probably more factors than Enneagram theory can reliably predict.

: Also, visitors to the 5 Board are a small, non-random (i.e., self-selected) sample of mostly 5s, each with a relatively small sample of personal experiences.

: So, we can rationalize and speculate about "ideal pairings," but I think it's probably best to look at empirical data from a formal study. For that, I recommend the book "Are You My Type, Am I Yours?" by Renee Baron and Elizabeth Wagele. (Unfortunately, the authors include no data on sample size.)

: According to Baron & Wagele, for female 5s, male 5s represent the "most common" choice of a mate. (B and W don't actually quantify "most common.") Pairings with male 6s and 9s are said to be "quite common"; with male 1s, 2s, 7s and 8s "less common"; and with male 3s and 4s the "least common."

: For male 5s, pairings with female 2s are the "most common." Pairings with female 1s are "quite commmon" and pairings with all other females are "less common."

: There is no data on satisfaction level associated with each type of pairing. The data only reveals the most prevalent pairings among those who are in a relationship.

: P.S. Re: Babelfish's post below. I just took the New Test a second time and discovered that I'm one of the 5/4 hybrids.

: E5: Plus 9
: E4: Plus 8
: E8: Plus 4

: All other scores were zero or negative, with the lowest being E1 at minus 8.
