I agree with you just about 100 percent. I appreciate science with the kind of awe that one feels when gazing meditatively at a vague landscape of wonders. Whenever I start focusing on a microcosm of details, I realize I would rather be doing something else... anything else. :)
Also, your recollection of "analyzing poetry" hit home with me. In high school I had this 7-ish English teacher (lots of 5 influence) who conducted a session of inanely-detailed poetry analyses, thus turning me off to my ordinary enjoyment of English class. In college, the focus was even more academic, but even then, I always had the choice in my projects to leave my mark as a Poet, rather than a Scholar. I was at my best when I allowed myself to make this decision. When I did not allow myself to make this decision, it was usually because I was overwhelmed by the serious tone of the assignments, whose dry wordiness made them sound like legal briefs. Bereft of inspiration, I invariably flopped out a dispensable product, and bitterly so I must admit.
In art, technique is a servant to creativity. I suppose the ideal method of prosperity in education would be to make creativity the foreground, and technique the background, which may demand considerable imagination on your part if an art course is not conducted by those standards.
