First of all, I'd like to say that I'm new to Enneagram Theory and that I am not completely familiar with the language and the terms used in this field of study.

I do, however, have some knowledge of the Perennial Philosophy -- i.e., the views common to the great mystical traditions of the world: Yoga, Samkhya, Advaita Vedanta, Buddhism, Christian mysticism, Sufism, the Kabballah, etc.

As someone with no formal training in Enneagram Theory, my understanding of words such as "void" and "essence" will be based on my personal background. I can't guarantee that my definition will correspond with those of Enneagram theorists.

I do feel that you have understood me well enough. I equate the Void with Primordial Essence. But Essence is not a "thing" that is contained in the Void. The Void is thingless... the Void is "no-thing-ness." The Void itself is Irreducible Essence from which illusionary objects are carved out from the underlying Homogeneity (by arbitrary demarcations).

On the various message boards, we frequently say "I am such-and-such an EnneaType." Yet Searle and Riso and Hudson will agree that the opposite is true -- the EnneaType is precisely who we are not.

The ennea-mask which gives us our sense of individuation is a counterfeit of the Authentic Self, which is Primordial Essence. Each EnneaType represents a different strategy for turning away from the truth about our Primordial State.

Until I read Searle's explanation, I didn't understand the statement that EnneaTypes 1 through 8 are derivatives of EnneaType 9. Searle says that 9 is a composite of the other eight. So, whereas the rest of us have only one basic strategy for escaping the truth, EnneaType 9 seems to have a repertoire of eight strategies at his disposal.

Standing at the precipice, perhaps 4s and 5s are only thinly-veiled from the Void... from Primordial Essence. May we each find the courage to stop our running, face our moment of Truth, and perhaps wake up from the Ennea-Trance.
