Thank you all for your input on this little discussed topic. I read Searle's article (thanks for the link), and your comments. Here's my take.

The state of "no-thingness" is at point 9, true union. The state of "nothingness" is the void, or the pseudo-void if we refer to the void as the "emptiness of enlightenment". The void is not the state of samandhi or nirvana (loss of ego), it is a losing of ourselves. One progreses in life through the stages of dependence to independence (individuation)before achieving social interdependence and/or personal transcendence. One must BE an individual (ego) before one can give up the ego. Failure to do so means getting lost in the void.

For example, Kabalah was not taught before a Jewish man was at least 40 years old, had a stabile career, studied Talmud & Torah, and preferably had a family (which in those days would mean that the children would be near fully grown or at least past their formative years). In other words, fully developed in identity, independence and societal interdependence. The experience of Kabalistic enlightenment was so great that one might be inclined to give up this world and get lost in the experience (void). This was not the goal of Jewish teaching. The goal was perfection and completion of this world (Tikkun).

If one is sufficiently grounded in their instincts, mature in their emtions, and sophisticated in their mental activity, then one can experience the emptiness and become a more complete human being. Otherwise, experiencing emptiness can act like whirlpool and swallow you so you lose yourself. One who is ready for the experience can go through itit and be "spit out" on the other end of the whirlpool.

Now, emptiness comes from union with the oneness, or from the "dark nights of the soul" which is the void between 4 and 5. The "jump" from 4 to 5 is a poor choice of words. One doesn't jumo as much as one goes through the experience. One can experience the esence in the void through grace.

As for 8's & 1's, they are outside and inside versions of 9. All types have all 9 strategies for dealing, 9 has equal access to them.

I know this raises more questions, but I'm out of time! Comments please!
