I appreciate the response and wanted to pickup on the "descent into darkness" aspect of being a seeker. I read Hero's Journey and the Desert
Fathers. There and elsewhere, mention is made that while the descent seems compelling and expansive, the return can be challenging or impossible.
A search can become a descent into madness or preoccupation with forms
of enlightenment (akin to an addiction.) Having a mentor, guide or spiritual director helps maintain focus and preserve an intact psyche.
I am not fearful of that. I did take such advise seriously and kept in
touch with a mentor during my own pursuits. There was a time when my own
introspection and growth work uncovered a "darkness" that was frightening
at the time. My shadow was like a demon once let out of the cage.
That is not releated directly to the thread, but it is an important consideration. IMO.
