all right...we have more than just canines...he whole social development, eyes in the front of our head, color vision, thumbs, speech, are all parts of the average omnivorous predatory primate. we got em, chimps do, and the others who act in similar manners. we're just better at it.
now, how can a human possibly think not "like an animal, with base desires et al?" that is not possible. we ARE animals, not plants or rocks or what have you. that said, you are right, this is not really the important thing.

now, on to morality...we ascribe full moral rights to people who show the abilities of the average healthy human. this is not to be altered by apearance, creed, sexuality, etc. that wold be bad. it is altered on the basis of personhood, though. humans who are impaired permanently, with no hope of ever getting better (like downs syndrome) are LESS than the average healthy human. and as such should be accorded less moral rights. you dont expect me to treat my cat the same as my child, do you? for the same reason, impaired humans should not be treated like everyone else. simple as that.
