Can't help thinking of the theory that a maths specialist once told me when I searched the web for the enneagram 5,6 years ago, to write my MA thesis on. She figured out that the enneagram circle could also be seen as one learning circle, with steps starting at 1. One must take in mind that these steps don't necessarily say much about character or personality type enneagram numbers. She used the process of learning to drive as an example: 1. The enterprise. Everything has to be done the right way, we're going to undertake somthing new. We'll get the license as fast as possible, and we're not going to make any mistakes on the way 2. The adept is totally open to instruction 3. The learning driver is still on the automate, performing spotlessly, however still exactly how the instructor shows him to 4. The driver-to-be starts arguing: he's developing his own insights.. driving with your instructor can create frictions now, but at least personal choices are made. Driving becomes an individual thing! 5. After the storm driver-to-be reflects on his driving attitude: what choices are good, which where bad, he reflects on his own style 6. Learning driver starts bringing his thoughts about driving into practice. He knows the rules, hates traffic lights at silly spots but respects them in general..Still a bit cautious he becomes now well aware of dangers and consequences of what he does... 7. and of the opportunities of driving!!!. Driver starts to really take pleasure in driving, driving is usefull, it brings him everywhere he wants to go and so provides lots of freedom. Sometimes he just can't stop because of the sheer joy of driving 8. Driving is sure usefull and is to be effectively used in order to get what you want. Driving is but a means to get you where you wanna be, although a good race and a bit of overtaking is good to work off one's irritation or to stimulate the gut feeling... 9. To everything is an end. Driving is a nice invention for lazy bugs who do not wish to cycle or walk, but if it is not absolutely necessary and we can afford it we can take a taxi as well. We've seen it all, it's time for... something new. And there's a new learning process start at phase UNO. Challenging! : * Sure, I like to stress the systemic/complex reality of self too! We are not just one type with hopefully a slight influence from either the rightish or leftish neighbor... We are in fact a "gang" trying to learn and live together in a rather limited space: interesting how this inner group dynamic shapes up over time.
