Personally I had always heard and believed that the reason marijuana became illegal is because deep down it was the government's way of oppressing Mexican immigrants, as they were the ones who used the drug the most at first. Kind of the same reason why opium becaume illegal in San Francisco after a lot of Chinese people immigrated there. Maybe that's just a story liberals like to tell each other, though. I defer to Isaac as he is obviously more of an expert on the subject than I am.
