To pork and I, the concept of "fear" is very hard to pin down. I use what I'm sure you'd think is a very broad definition of fear, and pork seems to do the same.

Example: you're driving above the limit, you spot a cop car up ahead, you get down below the limit. You've used foresight to predict an undesirable outcome, and modified your behaviour to prevent that outcome.

To me, this qualifies as fear. To me, any other word used to describe it, like 'prudence', 'discretion', 'being sensible' is simply a euphemism. The equation I'd use is

Foresight + prediction of undesirable event + behaviour change to prevent undesirable event = fear

Fives exhibit more of this behaviour than other types, IME, because Fives think a lot, compared to say, twos or fours. I know you mistrust triads in relation to fear so let's just say that types 8, 9, 1, 2, 3, 4 spend a lot less time consciously thinking than fives overall. This implies that they use foresight less, as foresight requires conscious thought. Time and again, I've seen people from these six types get hit hard by perfectly predictable and preventable things (like credit card debts) because they are simply not in the habit of using foresight. You suggest solutions that seem perfectly obvious to you and you see from their faces that they had never thought of it.

In a nutshell: fear requires thought, fives think a lot, therefore fives will fear.

: ...I've read a great deal about personality disorders... I've a good understanding of the enneagram... I've drawn my own conclusions about correlations and, from a theoretical perspective, am satisfied with this rough structure.

: Type 1: Obsessive-Compulsive
: Type 2: Histrionic
: Type 3: Narcissitic
: Type 4: Oral (Depressive/Borderline)
: Type 5: Schizoid (and Schizotypical)
: Type 6: Self-Defeating
: Type 7: Anti-social
: Type 8: Sadistic
: Type 9: Symbiotic (Dependent)

: : : 5s are no more fear motivated than any other type. Triads and their terms are often misleading.

: : Eschew the triads if you wish. For the purpose of this discussion, the concept of basic fears for every type exists prior to triadizing. It is more important to understand what *kind* of fear drives each type than it is to speculate about which types are most or least motivated by fear.

: : I smell fear in every Five I meet. I'm sure they would deny it and say they're just being sensible. (Some Sixes do exactly this, too.) I might reply, what's so insensible about fear? It's part of the survival instinct. And as for instincts, my friend Rotten Apple always said, "Don't deny the beast!" Upon considering that, would they accept the fact that they're motivated by fear?

: Well, obviously you have never met me. :) There are extraverts who 'interpret' every introvert as being fearful... I think they often miss what it is to be introverted, yes?
