A mature and enjoyable comment, thanks. I shall add that years of econmics studies in the field of development (cross cultural) have lead me to the conclusion that nothing will ever make up for individual desire and level of awareness. I do believe, wrongly or rightly, that's my personal responsability and there are NO WAYS to prove it better or worse on a scientific ground, that there are some hidden/implicit play rules to the world, that there are some spiritual or higher values, but it is our responsability to realise it and work for it. Life is full of paradoxes, one of them is the mysterious link between individual desire and collective desire. The buddists say: be in peace with yourself and you'll bring peace in the world. There is a lot of truth to that.
Yes, europeans have a different history and this is deeply reflected in our collective consciousness. Socialists brought a lot of collective progress at the cost of their own lives then, early capitalism was ugly and blind here in Europe. There was much legitimacy and spiritual concern in K.Marx's writings. WHat people hadn't grasped yet then is that change can only take place from within, you cannot force it from outside.

: Dave, I have not read any of the replies, but I have one thing to say:

: Sufis say "Leave the mind behind, look at the world with your heart." "Die to your ego."

: Your many posts and comments point in the way of using the mind too much to compartmentalize, to classify and stay there. It is as if you feel more comfortable having put everything in their related boxes. It is probably you have recently done a great study on the Enneagram and you are excited about the wealth of information before you.

: And the communist bit: They can come from all sections of the Enneagram. The Americans probably would not be as aware of it as the Europeans as to what it means to live with Socialists and Communists. These ideologies can be promoted and advocated equally well by all types. And mind you Stalin they say was an 8.

: Cheers

:
: : Being that the traditional definition of economics is," the allocation and distribution of scarce resourses", and one of communism's tenets being, "from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs", does that make the majority of 5's attracted to communist and socialist ideologies?

: : Rationale: 5's have a scarcity mentality and find the world overwhelming. Capitalism, especially the laissez-faire purist variety, is characterized by it's volatility and uncertainty. To lessen these outside demands,a secure, predictable, less demanding system like communism seems attractive for satisfying basic needs and allowing 5's to pursue their more mental and quieter pursuits.

: : Furthermore, since 5's often have lesser needs for the material things of life, it would be only logical that they think that everyone shouldn't need the material excess that a capitalist society produces.

: : Comments?
