: However logically that which can be divided can be classified - accurately. Indeed people well versed with the Ennegram can often easily determine a person's personality. Admittedly the personality types are all in a sense inseperable as they all exist as potentials in everyone. Yet why can't the same processes used by people be integrated into a test that works reliably?

That's because we are humans, not machines. Not everything can be measured by a meter, no matter what engineers would insist.

: What ideas do people have on the theory of testing for types? Can it be done? How?

Open-ended questions and someone with lots of experience in analysing people administrating the test is the best way to go.
