You could always identify the 5s in school because they were always going out and doing some extra curricular stuff. 1s and 3s were always out for grades. Looking back on it it is clear that the 5s are the ones the good universities covet. They want original thinking. The danger with 5s is to keep them on some kind of staight and narrow so they can pull through the boring stuff. A big problem for me in H.S. Once I got to college though it all staightened out.
