: I have had very few what I would consider close friendships with women. Unfortunately, I never really think I have much in common with most women, and men can be rather alarming because it seems so often they wish to "cross the line," which usually ruins everything.

: I've wondered once or twice what it would be like to have the kind of relationship that Diarmuid was referring to, but I know what Laurence does: these are the same women who will backstab each other quite viciously with very little provocation. I have no interest in that.

: The friendships I do have with (for the lack of better phraseology) compatible women, are among the things I most treasure.

I have several close friendships with women, and don't understand the need to stereotype women into "backstabbing", superficial people who can't be trusted (I am responding to some of the followups as well). Sure, there are women (and men!) like that, but there are many more who are not. I have recently found a group of women to hang out with who are very tolerant of my need to sometimes withdraw and isolate. They just leave me alone when I do it and talk to each other instead. I am very grateful not to be judged for this... it's kept me active with them when I otherwise would cancel social engagements. I've also found that doing something active (ie, this gang is made up of very athletic women: we mountain bike, run, backpack and hike together) really helps social events from becoming awkward for me. Just a few thoughts...
