: : : It seems like America is believing this to be a Holy War too, just like the Islamic extremists. I think the fact that the enemies have strong religious motives is what is making Americans mix the religion/patriotism thing. This isn't just some other country, instead this is another culture and religion. The Taliban knows this is a holy war; Americans don't know it, but they don't realize they are making it into one.

: : : One can't help but see the parallels of Palestinians dancing in the streets singing a song called "God is Good" while on the other side of the globe, Americans hold services and sing "God Bless America".

: : Zealots scare me. It doesn't matter what religion or philosophy. I was thinking along these same lines over the weekend...and I'm not even an atheist...sort of a custom blend of Taoism and Presbyterianism. So, it means I like balance, whiskey, and Amazing Grace played on bagpipes. Anyhow, I'm getting scared of this sudden and rabid nationalism. This is one of those times when people aren't thinking...when they are so caught up in emotions that they seem to abhor thinking. This seems to be a time to choose my rants carefully. This liberal white trash boy is frightened by the nationalist wingnuts as bad as he's scared of the terrorists. I don't understand religious fervor at all.

:
: ***I fail to understand what you two are so scared of.

: Perhaps of the low IQ joe monster trucks and travis 6-packs reverting to the ignorance of the 80's where steve chevy camero wore "The Aiatolla can suck my weenieola"?
: Patrick swayze in "Red dawn". Pathetic but true.

: I think the nation is more intellegent now. We dont have a leader with hair dye solvents shrinking his skull (Reagan).

Heh heh...I'm not scared of the monster trucks. However, there are some pretty stupid bin Laden T-shirts out there. No. I am scared of the people that would agree with the recent statements by Falwell and Robertson. Their followers are the local wingnuts that are unbalanced. Their rhetoric eerily echoes the statements of the Taliban. I'm not afraid of Steve Chevy Camaro...he's basically a pretty good guy...a little reactionary but usually listens to reason after you calm him down patiently. Do you believe that the zealots on either side are not frightening? One side believes all Americans should die because we are a godless society. The other extreme believes that we brought it on ourselves because we are a godless society. Now, I do not believe that the extremes of any philosophy can have an accurate picture of the world around them and the events that unfold...tunnel vision, ya know? Joe Six Pack's ok, Pat Robertson is not.
