Of course religions profit from taking the idea seriously. Science is a major religion that profits from it, with its evolution, and personal ambitions make up an even bigger religion that profits from it, with dictates of money, fame, power, or what-have-you.

Here is the purpose of life: HAPPINESS

The only reason anything does anything, if the thing has a choice, is because it thinks on some level that it will become happier for the doing so. This desire for greater happiness is termed "want". Here is a dramatic example: Try and do something you don't want to, right now. Desire for the feeling of triumph over someone else you proved wrong is a powerful want, and probably would be your motive, if you actually try the exercise. If you look close enough at anything you do, there is some reason you did it that is directly linked to the desire for personal happiness. Even altruistic acts work this way, because the feeling of selflessness is a greater high than most anything in the world. This in no way decreases the nobility of the altruistic person, as they ARE helping others.

Since personal happiness is the root of all personal purposes, total happiness must be the root of all total purposes. Whatever the purpose of life is, the only reason it is a purpose in the first place is because it increases happiness for the total.

THE ABOVE MATERIAL is not based on logic, it is based on belief. By logic alone, it is not possible to prove that action exists at all. The motive for something that doesn't necessarily exist doesn't necessarily exist.
