What I’ve learned about myself from reading all of this is that there are as many ways of looking at things as there are people. My way of looking at a given topic will correspond to some degree with another person’s perspective, and will totally *not* correspond with the perspectives of others.

When everyone has had their say and clarified their positions, a polarization occurs. How important I feel the issue is determines for me the significance of that polarization, and that in turn helps me choose how to deal with those on the other side of the issue.

Diarmuid and Isaac have clarified their views on the matter extensively. Diarmuid feels nonhuman species have no emotions or intrinsic value beyond what utility they provide for humans and so sees nothing wrong with Isaac’s actions, while Isaac expresses no remorse for having betrayed his roommate’s trust and killing an innocent animal to suit his whim. In fact, Isaac has rather bemoaned the ‘injustice’ hoisted upon him at being evicted by his roommate. Throughout the discussion, both parties have rationalized their views with arguments I found to be specious, self-serving, illogical, inhumane, pathological, vicious, and often downright stupid.

Like Emily, I believe it is impossible to separate a person from their actions, choices, values, and perspectives. I find that the beliefs these individuals have espoused are contrary the beliefs to which I subscribe in a very fundamental way. Whatever their perspectives might add in another context, I believe that my knowledge of their behavior and beliefs in *this* context would poison for me any communication coming from them. And, frankly, I just really don’t think that anyone so fundamentally morally and logically flawed (based upon my value system and manner of reasoning) could add any redemptive value to my life, or to any topic I’m interested in.

Whom we choose to associate with in our lives says something about us as well – birds of a feather, etc. Thus, I choose not to associate with these two individuals in any way. I will no longer read or respond to their posts, which, in addition to supporting my conscious choice to seek out more evolved humans to correspond with, will have the added benefit of keeping me from wasting my time reading the senseless, hateful crap they spew out.
