: On reading one of the responses to the brain side dominance post, I saw that fine manual skills were categorized as being controlled by the left side of the brain. : I have a really weird thing that happens with my fine manual skills. I become skilled VERY fast after starting to learn a manual skill, but then my form deteriorates. For example, I took a one-semester beginner course (I am in high school) in typing a few years ago, and my typing speed shot up from 15-20 words per minute to about 60 near the end with 0 errors for a series of 1-minute typing exercises. Now, although I hit the keys even faster, I make many more mistakes, and my typing speed is slowed to probably about 50 words per minute including all the backspaces. : In another example, I had the best handwriting in the class when I was learning to write cursive and print in grades 1-3. I also wrote very fast. Now, I am one of the messiest writers I know, and unless I pay very close attention and work hard at it, my printing is tight and cramped and hard to read, although still very fast. : I cannot draw curves. I am a fairly good artist, and I can see the curves in what I see, but I cannot draw them at once. I have to begin to draw the curve, then correct, then correct again, tens of times, before I get it right. This is not part of the problem, but it may be related. : Why does this happen? I would think that if I can learn a manual skill to a high level of skill in a short time, I would improve to a higher degree of excellence with similar proficiency.
