I have heard that meditation can decrease or eliminate the sense of "boredom" and, in my own experience, this is true: during the times that I have consistently meditated, I felt much less overall boredom. Although I have also heard that this may just be a side effect of the incomparable boredom of meditation:). One of the enneagram authors (Palmer I think) says that zen and meditation appeal to 5's in an unhealthy way, in that they appeal to a 5's desire to withdraw and lead a totally mental existence; this seems to me to match what you are saying about pursuing meditation as maybe being "backward", in that it's not really addressing the problem. Still, in my experience meditation is a useful practice. The only trick now is figuring out how to stop being so goddamned lazy, so that I will actually meditate!
