Matching the proper technique to the situation at hand.

Basically knowing hand and leg strikes and defenses and grappling ground fighting is a good base. Some sort of weapon defense is very good to know also.

Traditional martial arts do have a place. They are good. They can save lives.

A street or unexpected assault is so fast and unexpected having good reactions and wisdom is more important than specfic techniques.

If I were to go it again I would learn boxing, thai boxing and submission wrestling in a fluid interelate manner.
I would learn karate/aikido based weapon disarms.

The maniacs aboard the sept. 11 planes weilded box cutters. Now people know they would risk getting a superficial razor cut rather than dying in a crash.
