Personalities describe a set of habitual behaviours. The Myers Briggs describes how one processes information and that results in a habitual behaviour eg an introvert will generally not contribute immediately to a verbal situation until they have internally processed that and come to their own assessment; this tends towards quiet behaviour initially. On the other hand, the enneagram describes motivations and reasons for acting the way we do. EG A motivation for security wil result in certain repetitive behaviour types. Both systems are coming at behaviours from a different angle but both describe habitual behaviours. Most MBTI types can be found in all enneagram types so to me that would suggest that there are 16 variations at least in each enneagram type.

I find both typing systems useful and complementary although I favour the enneagram for its richness and depth. It depends on your definition of personality but mine is habitual behaviours and both the MBTI and enneagram describe that. Sharlee
