: "Gee, honey, we're honest and loving towards one another while everybody else is hostile and surly. Let's be more like everybody else and have some screaming arguments, followed by us sleeping is separate rooms!"

I'd flip that coin over and say that the small hostilities become magnified.

: You're right, of course. People really do imitate each other in stupid ways. But I don't. I may do stupid things, but I don't do 'em in imitation of others. I am peer pressure-immune, marketing-immune. I have a certain amount of trouble relating to the other 99% of the population, who are slaves to peer-pressure and Madison Avenue.

Now, that's a good way to be as long as you don't decide against products or actions on the sole basis that it's being pushed by peers or advertisers.

: Anyhoo, to me it seems logical to pull closer to your loved ones as the outside world gets nastier. But logic is very much a minority interest. There are more people that love seeing subtitled movies than who allow logic to influence their decisions.

I was looking at it from the opposite, that the outside world was hostile precisely because of interpersonal hostilities. The only difference being scale. It seems logical that the hostilities in small relationships would be reflected in the larger relationships.
