Enneagram Type 5 Board Archive Re: 6s... 3s... and social rolesPosted by Bartholomew on January 12, 2002 at 07:49:06: In Reply to: 6s... 3s... and social roles posted by RoTtEn ApPlE on January 11, 2002 at 01:13:40: : : : Here enneagram type seems to come into play. I know an INTJ 3w4 who is pretty girlie and looks for a macho guy... cuz 3s are into social ROLES. I know an INTJ 9w1 who is very girlie and looks for a macho guy... because that's the way things ARE (why question). Buuuuuuuuut I know an INTJ 5w6 who fits your description damn well... except she does where makeup and fashionable clothes... though more as a recognized means to an end. : : : Just for the sake of clarity, I'm an INTP. : : My impression is that the whole "social role" fixation was more a 6 thing. : 3s like social roles because their identity has generally been shifted into a false self that is validated by others. I AM a salesman, a cheerleader, a doctor, a rockstar, a mother. From the three's perspective, those are all goal-related roles, not social ones. The approval by others is the only social part of them that the threes are interested in, and they are only interested in that so that they can CONFIRM their achievement of their goals. : 6s look to social roles to find a safe authority niche where they know what's expected of them... the military, the police force, a traditional family. "Authority" has only a small direct influence on the actions of sixes; the issue of authority arises with sixes largely incidentally, because authority is a significant part of most social realms, and to play out a role in the social environment usually necessitates taking a stance on the prevailing authority. Also, you're speaking too generally. Being in the military, the police force, or a traditional family does not dictate how the six must act in a given circumstance. There is too much leeway for the six to be comfortable with. Sixish social roles more often take the form of critic, friend, one of the group, one outside the group, joker, expert, winner, slacker, etc. - event-specific roles that say exactly what the six should be doing in a particular situation or toward particular people.
