Richard Feynman (Nobel prize winner and worker on Manhattan project)
explained that phenomenon in his hilarious book "Surely you must
be joking Mr. Feynman." He said that you can only have a discussion about
something when the parties know little or nothing about the subject.
If someone really knows about the topic it turns into a lecture or
teaching session. That's why discussions about religion arise...the
participants know little or nothing about it, no matter how well schooled
they are.
