: I guess the question is academic, because Dr. Smith is obviously also dead by now, probably by strangulation. But it's an interesting debate. Also, was Dr. Smith joking the second time, too, given his proven dishonest joker nature? It's possible that Mrs. Jones just fractured her hip, or that she really DID break two vertebrae and survive. We don't really know.
