I tend to go with the latter as they have said newborn babies can have 9 different orientations but I keep an open mind. Sharlee : did you mean you go with the former? cause it seems that if newborns have no defined type, then that would point to external influence as the cause for the type. #### No I meant the latter but I do not have enough information to be certain of this. : personally, i'm big in favor of nurture, not nature, when it comes to personality. as i've said in the past, there is no way to settle this question, i don't think. it's purely academic. but nurture makes the most sense to me. here's why: .. ### I've actually read recently that newborn babies can distinguish their mother's face within minutes of birth. I remember my second daughter staring at me intensely just after birth. : so, to recap: ##### Here's an hypothesis. The fear/flight syndrome is caused by the release of adrenaline. Adrenaline needs receptors in order to take effect. Now if people have geneticaly different numbers of receptors or their receptors have different threshholds (perhaps an inherited trait), then it is entirely possible that the degree of the fear reaction is influenced by the number of receptors which would be genetically inherited. Thus someone with low threshold receptors and/or low numbers may be a much calmer person (perhaps a 9) than say a 6 would be, given the same amount of information coming in. In another hypothesis, feeling is a right brain function. People who are right brain functioned may be so because they inherited neurons that have more connections and fire better than the left side. I am not saying this is the case but am putting forward hypotheses how a genetically determined trait can translate into a pattern of reaction to the information coming in. In the anger triad, aggressive tendencies could well be influenced by levels of testosterone which could be geetically preset. Thus we may be genetically set up to respond in certain patterns which then translate into persoality types. Sharlee :
