(hence why brightly colored toys are so popular with babies.) doing so trains their vision more effectively than looking at bland, edgeless stuff. and looking at faces closely is simply a very good survival trait: kids that made eye contact with their parents lived long enough to reproduce. : --From what I've heard, a small baby doesn't see well enough to recognize anything, even a face from a similar object. They recognize their mother by smell. : In fact, there was a TV commercial featuring this fact, I can't remember what it was for, but it seemed credible enough.
