: :### the big question is whether [an external formative influence] really does influencepersonality type or whether there is some form of genetic programming. I tend to go with the latter as they have said newborn babies can have 9 different orientations but I keep an open mind. Sharlee

: did you mean you go with the former? cause it seems that if newborns have no defined type, then that would point to external influence as the cause for the type.

: personally, i'm big in favor of nurture, not nature, when it comes to personality. as i've said in the past, there is no way to settle this question, i don't think. it's purely academic. but nurture makes the most sense to me. here's why:

: personality happens in the brain. i think we can agree on that. you think with the brain. even the "heart" and "gut" centers really just correspond to different things the brain does. your personality is in your brain.

: your brain is composed of neurons. again, i think that everyone can agree on that.

: now, here's the kicker...
: neurons can't do SHIT until they're exposed to information. newborn babies can't see, and while they're learning to see, there's lots of talk-over from the other senses until the visual, audio, and olfactory centers of the brain separate into unique bits. that's why loud noises scare babies so much. they see their entire world ripple and shake when they hear a loud noise. frightening if you're a baby, i bet! anyway, tho, neurons are a self-organizing neural network (sonn), but they're not pre-organized. that's crucial to human survival, cause it allows you to make more neurons (and, yes, you DO create new brain cells, just like everything else, but quite a bit slower) and it also allows people to recover use of faculties lost from stroke, anurism, or other neural damage.

: so, to recap:
: personality is something the brain does.
: the brain is a neural network. (a sonn to be exact.)
: personality is something a neural network does.
: neural networks need to be exposed to info to do anything.
: a person's brain needs to be exposed to information before it can do anything.
: personality is something it does.
: therefor, a person needs to be exposed to information to have a personality.
