: My question is, do they actually occur, or do we simply remember something that never happened to us?

REM dreams are actual, real memories from our awake life - but cut up, reorganized, and redistributed in our dream life.

The actual dream components, both perceiving inorganic sensations (colors, spaces, spatial dimensions, etc.) and judging organic visceral decisions, (feelings, emotions, connections/ thoughts with/ about other people etc.) - are all input into our brain from our awake time.

When we sleep, when we dream, these same elements taken from our awake moments get 'redistributed', 'cut up' and 'reorganized' in our dreams. This is why we still see the same houses and streets as we do in our real life, but the dimensions and shapes and feelings we have towards them are somehow backwards, sideways, reversed somehow, in someway not quite the 'same'.

The brain is simliar to a computer in that it takes in information as input during the awake time, as well as giving out information as output (our actions and words) during the awake time. But during REM dream, the internal processing "re-writes" the source code when the "input" front user end is not actively engaged at the moment.

This is what makes the brain able to "remember" and learn. Experiments prove that the more REM sleep people lack, the less able they are to learn and remember simple things, thus severely reducing one's ability to perform necessary taks and functions that enable us to stay alive in life.

Therefore, REM sleep (dreams) function to maintain the brain's learning, memory, and cognitive thinking ability is critical to our very survival and ability to stay alive during our awake life.
