When you say a number by itself, it is a noun. When a number describes a quantity of an object, numbers are adjectives. (Five is a noun, and the "five" in five books is an adjective) Since you used it alone, you used it in an abstract sense, without making the number describe anything and thus be an adjective. Five and five is ten, if you go by the numbers. A five by itself is a number and not a noun. 5 and 5 is two fives, only ten if said as five plus five or five books say and five books. A five on this board plus another five make two fives on this board.
