But there are several problems with that, the primary one being Israel. Since we (US, UK, etc.) created Israel in 1948 we can't very well just abandon them. If we did so then they would probably be attacked militarily (as they have been 2 or 3 times since 1948) and would probably respond with nukes if it escalated enough. *I agree with this, but Israel was not the reason we went over there during the first Gulf War. Second, I don't see that Iraq is an immediate threat to Israel. I think Hussein is more interested in defending himself against us than he is in launching an offense against Israel. > But Israel is unwilling to retreat to the 1948 border; it expanded into the "Palestinian Territories" after the 1967 war and has been building settlements ever since. Even if they sincerely wanted to pull back (which they mostly don't), they have 100,000 religious-zealot settlers who think god gave them that land. *About that - by expanding its borders, Israel acted without reference to international law. If a nation is to be part of an international alliance, it needs to comply with international law. International law should be agreed upon by representatives from all nations within the international alliance. > The other big issue is OIL, which is presently the energy source for the modern world, and one of the primary foundations of the global economy.
